Philippine Creatures: Manananggal

The Manananggal is a type of Aswang in Philippine folklore. They are terrifying creature that is well-known for its malevolence and ability to terrify communities. The Manananggal is often described as a female monster, though male versions also exist. During the day, it appears as an ordinary human being, often disguising itself as an attractive woman. However, as night falls, the creature undergoes a gruesome transformation. It develops large bat-like wings and gains the ability to detach its upper torso from its lower body. The upper half then takes flight, leaving the lower half behind, while it searches for its prey. The Manananggal's preferred targets are pregnant women or individuals sleeping alone in their homes. It uses its long, sharp proboscis-like tongue to suck the blood from its victims. Apart from its vampiric tendencies, the Manananggal is also feared for its ability to enter homes silently and inflict terror upon its unsuspecting victims. To protect themselves from the Manananggal's attacks, Filipino folklore suggests various superstitions and measures. Some traditional practices include placing garlic, salt, or ash near windows and doors, hanging holy religious objects, or spreading crushed chili peppers around the house. The legend of the Manananggal has been passed down through generations and continues to be a prominent part of Philippine folklore, often shared in spooky tales and horror stories.
